Every year, a Writer in Residence is appointed by VU Amsterdam to reflect on current issues facing the university as a social institution. The Writer-in-Residence Programme is concluded with a publication.

Next to the article was a photo of the professor, dressed in a robe worn by Sufis. He had put it on in his room especially for Ad Valvas. He stood there as if he had agreed to the photo with some reluctance. Tamara looked at it for half a minute and concluded that she was sold. It was the last sentence that made her decide to enroll in his class. Faith as a prayer without end. Thinking as a prayer without end. She wanted to see how his eyes matched the language.
