Every year, a Writer in Residence is appointed by VU Amsterdam to reflect on current issues facing the university as a social institution. The Writer-in-Residence Programme is concluded with a publication.

Put a literary writer on a podium on a university campus and have him give a lecture, and you will see that the elusiveness of it, the fact that the writer has no idea what to say or do, somehow captures very precisely the twenty-first-century epistemological disquiet; the need to get a grip on the whole and become of service to life.
