Writer in Residence
Every year, a Writer in Residence is appointed by VU Amsterdam to reflect on current issues facing the university as a social institution. The Writer-in-Residence Programme is concluded with a publication.
Interested in Désanne van Brederode’s publication? Then visit this year’s Abraham Kuyper Lecture. Would you like to read the works of other Writers in Residence? These publications aren’t for sale but only gifted as collector’s items in limited quantities. If you are interested in these publications, please send an e-mail with your motivation to info@vuuniversitypress.nl.
Kristien Hemmerechts
In the meantime, I had to try to listen to what M was saying. ‘Feed them,’ he said. Who did he mean: our children? The children in the cellar? Of course he meant the children in the cellar. But how? Tell me how! Should I take our three with me to feed those two?
The speaker is a woman who was convicted for her part in a notorious Belgian sex crime. In Spewed Out she gives her view of the facts, presented in a monologue in which she confronts every reader with the elasticity of empathy. ‘Do you love the damned?’, a poet once asked. Kristien Hemmerechts asks that question again.
