Writer in Residence

Every year, a Writer in Residence is appointed by VU Amsterdam to reflect on current issues facing the university as a social institution. The Writer-in-Residence Programme is concluded with a publication.

Interested in Désanne van Brederode’s publication? Then visit this year’s Abraham Kuyper Lecture. Would you like to read the works of other Writers in Residence? These publications aren’t for sale but only gifted as collector’s items in limited quantities. If you are interested in these publications, please send an e-mail with your motivation to info@vuuniversitypress.nl.

It is about finally experiencing things again. Aisthèsis. The things we always forget because we supposedly already know them. It is about seeing again, and now well. To hear again, to feel again. And only now really, because it is only now beginning, now that we have been put on edge. That is why in art the trivial soon becomes interesting enough, because we often cannot reach precisely what is right in front of us, because in our satisfied grandiloquence and tendency towards ‘vision’ we look over it. To strip the obvious of its obviousness, that is art, so that it can really start to mean something to us. It is about leaving the fixed track and finally starting our lives.
