Writer in Residence

Every year, a Writer in Residence is appointed by VU Amsterdam to reflect on current issues facing the university as a social institution. The Writer-in-Residence Programme is concluded with a publication.

Interested in Désanne van Brederode’s publication? Then visit this year’s Abraham Kuyper Lecture. Would you like to read the works of other Writers in Residence? These publications aren’t for sale but only gifted as collector’s items in limited quantities. If you are interested in these publications, please send an e-mail with your motivation to info@vuuniversitypress.nl.

Arnon Grunberg

Arnon Grunberg

‘Why does someone obey? I see four possibilities. Out of fear of punishment. (A bad evaluation, a beating, scorn, prison, illness, death.) In the hope of a reward. (Love, wealth, fame, health, a good grade.) Out of the deep conviction that obedience in this case is the ethically right thing to do. (If God is good, then obedience to God is doing the right thing.) Out of habit and laziness. (People obey because disobedience is not worth it.) Often it will be a combination of the above motives why people obey God, the state, the boss, the partner, the teacher, the parent, the doctor.’

In Blind Obedience, Arnon Grunberg examines how hope and trust relate to loss and (human) sacrifice in our culture.
